Mapping Manhattan
We get so used to seeing Harry Becks' London Underground diagram - and variations of it around the world - that it often seems to be the only solution for mapping underground transport systems.
Interesting then, that New York City tried using an abstract diagrammatic approach for their subway map in the early 1970s, only to quickly ditch it in favour of a more traditional one.
There's a fascinating article by Michael Beirut on the development and subsequent rejection of Massimo Vignelli's NY subway diagram here.
