Developing medicine pictograms
And while we're thinking about clear patient information, here's an overview of some research by Theo Raynor et al into the effectiveness of pictograms in pharmaceutical packaging - Developing effective medicine pictograms for the UK.
I have grave reservations about the effectiveness of pictograms to accurately communicate anything but the simplest of concepts. I think they're useful as visual shortcuts when accompanied by text, but we need to be very careful when using them around anything as critical as healthcare. Lots and lots of user testing.
