An analysis of patient information leaflets
I just stumbled across this paper by Cheryl Twomey. [300Kb PDF] It's a couple of years old now, but still interesting and relevant.
Cheryl looks at the design features that affect the readability and comprehension of patient information leaflets, including typography and illustration. Most of it is just good design sense but it does no harm to re-enforce the message - keep it clean - keep it clear. Pay attention to the structure of the information and above all consider the needs, abilities and circumstances of the end user.
