Health Literacy

An interesting report has just been published by the UK National Consumer Council: Health Literacy - being able to make the most of health [1.3Mb PDF file]

The report was commissioned by the Department of Health and looks at the ways that people find, interpret and understand information about their health.

It has some disturbing observations, for instance that only 27% of people in higher social groups were likely to read medicine information leaflets - but that among the less well off the figure was even lower at 12%.

The report offers a number of useful recommendations, including "information should be available in plain language, and should be developed through work with literacy and education providers to create materials that are educative and user-friendly".

There's also an article on the BBC website about this here
