Less taxing forms

I have mixed feelings about designing forms - the exercise of balancing the information needed against the form's ease of use can be fascinating - but then just when you've got it all worked out and beautifully typeset, the client adds another half dozen questions.

Karen Schriver, author of Dynamics in Document Design, has recently had a go at redesigning the US income tax declaration form. As well as rewriting the text to make it friendlier and easier to understand, she also altered the structure of the content and the typography to try and make it more accessible. You can read more about this project here.

Personally I prefer the look of the original, but there we are.
