Colour-coding or colour-differentiation?

Stein Lyftingsmo just dropped me a line from Norway to suggest that I was being a little sloppy with my terminology. I've been referring to colour-coding in drug packaging when I should have been talking about colour-differentiation.

He's absolutely right - there is no colour-coding system that could possibly cope with all the licensed drugs available (12,000 in the UK I think). All we can hope to do is to make drug packs look sufficiently different from their neighbours that we don't mix them up. There is, of course, no substitute for reading the label.

Stein points to a very useful article about this here.
