Make your designer happy

Attractive Things Work Better (245Kb PDF file)

Do we like things because we can use them or can we use things because we like the look of them? This draft article from Don Norman's forthcoming book 'Emotional Design: Why We Love (or Hate) Everyday Things' suggests that the emotional reaction that we have to products has a significant effect on how easy we find them to use. Also that being happy broadens our capacity for creative thinking and new ideas. I'd go along with that.

Let's try these for stimulating creativity:

  • Warm comfortably lit places
  • Sweet tastes and smells
  • Bright, highly saturated hues
  • Soothing sounds
  • Harmonious music
  • Caresses
  • Smiling faces
  • Attractive people
Sounds like just another day at the office. Personally I get all my good ideas lying in the bath watching my Aduki light.
